The Science of Chakras

The science of chakras was well known amongst the ancients but in our modern world, it has become lost between Lululemon pants and rose quartz mala beads. It's easy to view the chakra system as an esoteric field of BS without understanding what they actually are and how they impact our physiological body.

Dr. Joe Dispenza, an international lecturer, researcher, corporate consultant, author, and educator, conducted an experiment in which he explored the connection between the mind and body. The experiment had two groups of people: A control group and an experimental group that meditated over a span of time. During each meditation, the subjects would envision their own enlarged biceps.

At the end of the study, the participants in the experimental group measured an average of 25% growth in their biceps, as opposed to the control group that showed little to no muscular development. Other case studies repeated his experiment and came up with similar results.

While Dr. Dispenza’s study proves that the mind can enhance and may even heal our bodies, it further illustrates how our thoughts can affect the physiological aspect as well.

He explains that thoughts cause biochemical reactions in your brain that release chemical signals. Those chemical signals make your body feel a certain way depending on your thoughts. Those feelings cause you to generate more thoughts that produce the same feelings. In other words, your thoughts drive your feelings, and your feelings drive your thoughts. The science of thoughts is similar to the science of chakras.

Explaining the Science of Chakras and the Endocrine System

Chakras are made up of energy centers that correspond to specific glands and bodily functions including personality, communication, reproduction, and many others.

The endocrine system is the biochemical powerhouse of the body which regulates the same bodily functions as the chakras. Essentially, these energy centers and the endocrine system work to modulate and maintain homeostasis or physiological balance in the human body.

Seven major energy centers link with seven major endocrine glands and are ordered from the lowest frequency, or physical aspect, to the highest frequency, or mental aspect.

  1. Muladhara: Root Chakra

The root chakra is responsible for actually “rooting” the soul to our physical bodies. It’s represented by the color red and is associated with the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland is responsible for the fight-or-flight response of the body and other needs to physically survive – in other words, self-preservation.

The root chakra is found on the base of the spine, and it involves the following body parts: legs, bladder, and spinal column. Problems related to the root chakra include physical health issues like arthritis or fatigue.

  1. Swadhisthana: Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra serves as the center of human emotions and sexuality. It’s represented by the color orange and is associated with the reproductive glands. This chakra is associated with the need to express one’s desires and pleasures such as intimacy or enthusiasm toward a person or an object.

The sacral chakra is located below the navel and involves the following body parts: testicles or ovaries, bowels, and womb. Some issues corresponding to the sacral chakra include prostate cancer, stress, and anger.

  1. Manipura: Solar Plexus Chakra

The solar plexus chakra is connected to one’s personality and a sense of individuality or ego. It’s represented by the color yellow and is associated with the pancreas. This chakra point is related to how an individual sees oneself and acts accordingly – self-esteem and willpower.

The solar plexus chakra is situated by the stomach and involves the following organs: intestines, kidneys, and liver. Issues faced by the solar plexus chakra include diabetes, digestive problems, and loss of control or power over oneself.

  1. Anahata: Heart Chakra

The heart chakra is the domain of love and other factors that affect love such as acceptance and compassion. It’s represented by the color green and is associated with the thymus gland. The thymus gland is responsible for regulating the immune system of the body. Unconditional love can be compared to the blood which flows continuously throughout our bodies without stopping.

The heart chakra is found in the heart and involves the following organs and other physiological properties: heart, lungs, and blood. Health problems that arise when this chakra is out of balance can include heart disease and high blood pressure.

  1. Visudha: Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is the center of self-expression, communication, and the capacity to understand others. It’s represented by the color blue and is associated with the thyroid gland, which regulates metabolism and the release of other hormonal glands in the body.

The throat chakra is located on the throat and is connected to the mouth, throat, and lungs. Health problems related to this chakra include asthma and vocal issues.

  1. Ajna: Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra is the seat of human intelligence and intuition. In a sense, this chakra enables us to receive and gather insights, and form concepts. It’s represented by the color indigo and is associated with the pituitary gland. It’s located between both eyes and involves the brain, eyes, ears, and nose.

  1. Sahasrara: Crown Chakra

The crown chakra serves as the source of wisdom, spirituality, and higher connection. It enables a person to perceive or sense things beyond concrete evidence or logical comprehension. It’s represented by the color violet and is associated with the pineal gland. The crown chakra is located above the forehead and involves the brain and central nervous system.

The Future of Science and Spirituality

The human body is the vessel of the human soul. This soul enables the brain to activate electric signals and allow the movement of muscular tissue. The interaction between the chakras and endocrine glands displays that the soul enforces a spiritual force upon its vessel or the human body.

While the spirit may remain as a mysterious and invisible force, science cannot entirely doubt its existence in human anatomy. One day, as the science of chakras gets studied further and becomes better known, it may not only be an energy source for the body but also be used for medical applications.
