Every emotion creates
a chemical equivalent.
She called these neuropeptides. When an emotion is too large for the nervous system to metabolize, neuropeptides get stored in the organs and tissues associated with that trauma. They can stay there for 60, 70, 80 years.

Bring to mind: what’s going on
in your life right now?
What’s creating anxiety, stress, or overwhelm? Hold that area of life. Rate the intensity from 1–10. Silently. This is the charge we’re going to work with.
Try it right now
Move awareness to the palm
of your right hand.
Do you notice more sensation than a moment ago? Vibrating. Pulsing. Tingling. You moved your awareness there — that’s all. No technique. No effort.
Now your left hand.
At the speed of awareness — which may be the only thing faster than light. Instantaneous. Wherever you point it, sensation follows. This is awareness operating non-locally.
Left foot. Big toe.
The toenail of the big toe.
Get granular. The more specific the awareness, the more the sensation follows. Where is awareness not? This is the beginning of tracking subtle energy in the body.
Sub-vocalization
That voice in your head
that never stops?
That’s called sub-vocalization — the conditioned mind. When you identify with that voice, you’re inside the conditioning. Every insight you’ve ever had came from that place.
Local awareness
When awareness is located
behind the eyes — ordinary mind.
This is where you access your conditioning. How much of your healing work have you done from right here? How do you get out of your conditioning while located inside it?

The key question
Do you feel safe
in your own body?

Rest and digest.
Parasympathetic.
When the body is at rest, it metabolizes the neuropeptides. We want to learn how to walk around in a rest-and-digest state — awake, eyes open — as an orientation of awareness.
Work on the mind — or help
the body feel safe?
When there’s contraction in the body, the mind has to respond. Manage the mind, or relax the body so the mind doesn’t have to be reactive. The latter is much, much easier.
Pillar 2
Stop doing this alone.
A nervous system cannot regulate itself in isolation if it doesn’t have the template and resource to do it. It needs another nervous system.
The two-year-old
A child is scared.
Two approaches:
  • Option 1: Explain thoughtfully and intelligently why they feel what they feel
  • Option 2: Get on their level. Hold them. Let them know they’re not alone.
  • One works. You already know which.
The nervous system doesn’t learn
from more information.
Just like someone sitting and speaking to you as a child had no impact on your nervous system — more information doesn’t fill a missing template. You need contact.

Three neuroscientists mapped
how co-regulation works.

Don’t bypass anything that comes up. Don’t go back into the mind. If sadness comes — be with sadness. If terror comes — be with terror. Let us presence it here with you.
Take a breath.
Unhook. Come back to the body.
We’re oscillating between mindset and body. Let the breath slow things down. Grab the awareness from behind the eyes and pull it out — into the space.
The center channel:
throat → heart → solar plexus → belly.
Bring that area of life to mind. As you do, look into the center channel. Where are you feeling a contraction? Squeezing? Pressing? Get specific — where exactly?
Forget the story.
Just be with the sensation.
Not trying to change it. Not trying to move it. Simply be with it exactly as it is. The same attunement you’d bring to an upset child — no need to explain anything.
You can’t use effort
to drop effort.
Simply by noticing the contraction — something begins to unwind. If there’s effort, just notice the effort. The Goldilocks zone: not too close, not too far. Soften the gaze.
